I've been there and driving in Alaska requires preparation. Always carry a spare can or two of gas and a spare tire (or two). Gravel roads outnumber paved roads 30 to 1 in Alaska so take along two spare headlights for when they get rocked and some strapping tape to save the windshield if it gets rocked. One thing I never thought about was all the dust the numerous trucks you will see kick up on those gravel roads, so a spare air cleaner would be a good idea too!Don't rely on your Onstar or cell phone because they only work around Anchorage & Fairbanks - everyone still uses CBs in Alaska, so get a CB before you trek north. If you pull over to the side of the road for ANY reason, I found that if there is a passing vehicle it will stop and see what you need (can be embarassing if you just have to pee or are taking a picture of the mountains or wildlife). Almost all of Alaskan roads have steep dropoffs for drainage and shoulders are very rare, so be careful pulling off the road.
