Last Hummer rolls off line at Shreveport GM plant

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) – It's the end of an era for the Hummer brand, and another milestone in the 32 years of Shreveport's GM plant history. Five years after the first Hummers rolled off the line here, production has come to an end.

Just after 9:00 AM, the last Hummers to be produced here rolled off the line. The smaller H3T had been in production for just a year and a half. Now, they're finished. It's the latest blow to hopes that the Hummer brand itself would survive, and does not bode well for the future of the plant itself. They're still producing the Chevy Colorado and the GMC Canyon here, but production on those will slow down this summer as well, all toward the ultimate end expected in June of 2012 or sooner, depending on demand.

All this comes as a result of GM's bankruptcy and reorganization last summer, and a deal to sell the Hummer brand to the Chinese heavy equipment manufacturer Sichuan Tengzhong fell through in February.
